Workshop Report: Training Seminar on Controlling Air Pollution and GHG Emissions in Beijing
Over the past two decades, Beijing has experienced rapid economic growth, with an average annual GDP growth rate of 12 percent. A side effect of this growth is that Beijing's air emissions have become a major threat to health for local residents. One of the largest cities in China, Beijing's consumed 62.90 million tons of coal in 2007, while total building area under construction in 2007 was 130 million square meters. Such a high energy demand, together with large scale urban construction and a rapidly growing vehicle fleet has created serious challenges to control of air emissions in the city. This report concludes that the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau and the California Air Resources Board should enhance their activities to share experience and lessons learned on air quality management and other fields of environmental protection.
